A home battery storage system in the UK typically costs between £3,000 and £8,000 installed, depending on the capacity, brand, and whether it's being retrofitted to an existing solar system or installed alongside new panels.
A 5kWh battery — enough to cover a few hours of evening usage — sits at the lower end of that range. A 10kWh system, which is what most households need to cover overnight consumption, typically costs £4,500 to £7,000 installed. Some households opt for larger systems of 15kWh or more, particularly if they have an EV to charge.
If you already have solar panels, you'll need an AC-coupled battery system — one that connects to your existing inverter. If you're installing solar and a battery at the same time, a DC-coupled hybrid inverter system is often more efficient and can be better value overall.
A battery on its own has a longer payback period than solar panels, because it doesn't generate electricity — it just shifts when you use the electricity your panels produce.
